In addition to that, it also lends weight to the argument that Ethelred employed those Norse lords as mercenaries. Provisioning mercenaries not only common practice in Italy during the fourteenth century, but considered the smart move, as a hungry mercenary band would often extract its sustenance from the surroundings, friendly or no.
