  • Forte, Oram, and Pedersen were useful because their monograph includes accounts of Frankish and Breton nobles employing Scandinavian mercenaries. In addition to that, it also includes an entry in which Charles the Bald employed a band of Vikings to proceed up the Seine and Marne to attack the disloyal Burgundians.  This event is of note because it results in the eventual overthrow of Charles in 887 by his nephew, Arnulf of Carinthia. In effect, this source was used to help display how Scandinavian mercenaries played an important role in facilitating the destabilization and perhaps eventual collapse of the Carolingian dynasty.
