  • The Icelandic Sagas are primarily used in this project to provide supplementary evidence for several different arguments. The most important of these arguments is in exploring how profitable becoming a member of the Varangian Guard is. In several of these sagas, there is mention of vast riches being obtained by mercenaries during their time in the east.
