Mallett is primarily used in this project because he is amongst the first historians to discuss the mercenary in a historical context. During his time, he was likely considered the greatest historical authority on the subject. He believed that the mercenary was defined most exclusively by both fighting for profit and being foreign. This project aims to prove that while these ideas are key concepts of the mercenary, they are not keystone characteristics without which the mercenary would not exist. His ideas will be discussed in detail during the historiography.
