Bagge is a Scandinavian historian whose work is important in both the environmental and historic portions of this thesis. He is a truly unique scholar because he is not strictly an environmental historian or a traditional academic, instead he is a mixture of the two and this makes his insights into Scandinavian history quite valuable for this project. His main purpose in this project is to help corroborate and support the argument that Denmark, Norway, and Sweden had certain environmental characteristics that made becoming a mercenary a viable career opportunity during the Viking Age.
