This project includes a corpus of one hundred and thirty ballads. Publication dates ranges from the 1600 to the 1730s. This project arises from an earlier project that analyzed the various depictions of Stuart queens. That project demonstrated that Stuart queens faced much harsher depictions in the broadside ballads than had earlier queens due to their status as powerful women, but also as Catholics in Protestant England at a time of great change. That project also examined the role of the queen consort in to contextualize the argument.
